Lauderdale-by-the-Sea occupies a barrier strip, and the geography sets the terms for everything.
The ocean side is beach. The seawall side is the Intracoastal and the canals cut off it, and that is where the retaining structures are. The strip between is narrow, densely built, and expensive.
For a seawall owner that combination produces a specific set of conditions: Intracoastal exposure with its traffic and wake, lots with very little room behind the wall, and access constraints that shape what is practical.
Intracoastal conditions
Walls fronting the Intracoastal here take what the waterway delivers, and it delivers steadily.

Much of this waterfront was developed decades ago, and the original seawalls went in with it.
Concrete seawalls in warm salt water are governed by how well the concrete protects the steel inside, and construction from that period reflects the standards of its time. The result is a body of walls occupying a similar part of the service-life curve.
For an individual owner that is context rather than diagnosis. Plenty of those walls are performing. But it does mean neighborhood activity is information: if walls around you have been rebuilt, the population you belong to has been reaching a threshold.
